End of Month Roundup – January

January. It’s been cold, blustery and a bit depressing after the Christmas festivities, but we’re through it now and about to enter the shortest month of the year! January has been an interesting and busy one for us. There was boring stuff like a boiler service that was almost impossible to arrange with the company (do you need us to move the washing machine or not?!) Then, I discovered our water meter hasn’t recorded any usage for the past year. This being the water meter our house inventory said we didn’t have! This then prompted a meter exchange from a miserable Anglian Water worker who clearly didn’t like babies or dogs (you’ve come to the wrong house, mate!)

The dog continues to scare and worry us every day and I’m constantly on the look out for any signs of a dodgy tummy. Cue him refusing to eat due to a cut in his mouth we didn’t find for hours and us panicking because it was a Sunday and if he had tummy issues again he’d have to be seen at the emergency vet and that cost us over £500 last time!

Anyway, boiler, water and doggy dramas aside here’s what we’ve been up to this month.

Weaning

I dread dinner time every night because little one sits in her high chair like a stroppy teenager, slouching, with her feet up refusing to eat what I give her. I’ve tried various different foods, foods she’s eaten before and liked. I’ve tried an earlier dinner time where it’s just me and her, but she point blank refuses to eat her evening meal. Unless it’s toast or yogurt, then she’ll eat it.

My mum suggested leaving her in her highchair to make a fuss until she ate to learn she’s not going to just get toast and yogurt on demand. She got so upset, there were bubbles coming out of her nose and I felt like the worst mum ever. She threw boiled egg at me in a rage, but finally she relented! And with tears rolling down her face, she ate the egg that had been in front of her the whole time and I made the biggest fuss possible, praising her for being a good girl. Then, she got her yogurt.

Freelancing

I guess I’ve technically gone back to work after maternity leave! Last year I dreamt that I was going to be made redundant, only for that to come a reality a short while later. I started some freelance writing work just before Christmas and I’m loving it so far. So, this month I’ve been trying to cram in writing and blogging around mum duties. It’s been tough, but it’s been strangely nice to be super busy.

Blogging

I’m really keen to go self-hosted and have started doing a bit of research on what I need to do. I think I still need to do more though to truly get my head around it and then I need to decide when I’m going to take the plunge. Especially as I need to fit it in around my freelance writing work.

Baby

It seems like only yesterday she turned 8 months and now we’re hurtling towards 9 months. A new month which I’m sure will bring plenty of new milestones, challenges and laughs. She seems to be doing well though, she’s still crawling around and pulling herself up on every piece of furniture imaginable and I’m often having to get her sticky fingers off my living room wallpaper! She keeps letting go of things now when she’s standing and she’s managing to hold her balance for a couple of seconds before falling on her bum.

It’s also lovely to see her reach out for us to pick her up and give her cuddles and she gives us the most slobbery, open-mouthed kisses!

Well, that’s a wrap for January. How was your month? Let me know in the comments section below.
